Understanding Drug Overdoses: BLS Response
Drug overdose rates in the US have been steadily increasing since 2000, according to statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). More than 70,000 Americans died from drug overdoses in 2017 alone. Drug overdose deaths are a public health problem affecting every area of the country. In San Diego, where Amerimed CPR offers BLS classes, this crisis is no different. Given the situation, it’s essential that one understands both the signs of an overdose and how Basic Life Support (BLS) can respond to the situation.
The term “overdose” refers to the ingestion or injection of an excessive amount of a drug, resulting in harmful or toxic effects, such as heart arrhythmia, seizure, coma, and even death. When someone experiences an overdose, they may not necessarily appear unconscious. Symptoms can range from confusion to difficulty breathing to impaired decision making. Since the symptoms may be similar to those produced by other medical conditions, it’s essential that one recognizes the signs of an overdose and responds quickly.
At Amerimed CPR, we offer BLS classes to help prepare people for these kinds of medical emergencies. BLS classes in San Diego offer training on responding to drug overdoes utilizing techniques such as administering emergency oxygen or using Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs). Participants learn skills such as airway management, wound care and patient assessment. This course teaches participants how to recognize signs of overdose, as well as proper communication with dispatchers and medical personnel. All course information is taught by paramedics with thorough knowledge of first aid and emergency care and certifications are issued upon successful completion of the class.
In addition to recognizing signs of a drug overdose, healthcare providers should know how to treat these conditions depending on the type of drug taken. For example, drugs such as opioids require administration of naloxone (Narcan). Those who complete our BLS classes in San Diego will learn how to use naloxone when needed. Also included in courses are opioid reversal and response guidelines set forth by local EMS agencies.
Effective treatment of opioid overdoses requires quick recognition and rapid response. Our BLS classes provide instruction on how to respond when called upon for assistance. Trainees are taught how to assess patients quickly, administer oxygen, and provide general support until advanced medical care arrives. This includes monitoring vital signs and providing basic life support (BLS). During our BLS classes in San Diego, participants gain understanding of how to identify the signs of an overdose, initiate lifesaving treatments, and summon advanced medical services.
By offering BLS classes here at Amerimed CPR we hope to educate both individuals and communities about both the risks associated with drug overdoses and their response. With the right tools and understanding, we believe more lives can be saved. To learn more about our BLS classes in San Diego, contact us today!r
